I learned a lot from Mr. Nolan in his presentation. First and foremost he had already come into my Marketing class earlier that week and taught us how to search for information on the school database, which was beneficial. So I was quite glad when I discovered he was going to teach us how to use google more efficiently. I never knew how to use advanced search in google but now realize how valuable it is for narrowing down information. In addition, I love the : edu method for finding academic works. This should undoubtedly give me more scholarly and respectable sources. I liked the exercise we did to try and find credible sources. I think I will be better at identifying phony sources next time I am browsing.
The main point I got from the link is the five step strategy for searching. The first step is analyzing your topic to decide where to begin. Are their distinctive words or phrases you can use? The second step involves using a table to pick a correct starting place. Thirdly, you need to vary your approach to searching and learn through your experience of it. Next you do not want to waste your time on a strategy that does not work and then return to strategies better informed. The major lesson I got from the five step strategy is that you must vary your search strategies if you want to be a successful browser. Along with the benefits of phrasing and truncating in your internet search you can use Boolean. This involves putting "and" or "and not" between the subjects of your search to make sure you are retrieving the right type of information on your subject.
